Avenza Maps: Offline Mapping App Reviews

I loved this app. I used to recommend it to everyone in my industry. Then I made the mistake of updating it. Huge mistake on my part. If you have this app DO NOT UPDATE. It is ridiculous that I need a paid subscription to import more than 3 maps and the subscription fee is flat out ridiculous. Additionally it stopped working on my phone today. Congratulations on RUINING a great app

Its a shame that an app that used to be at the top of firefighters, foresters, environmentalists, first responders and many other public service areas now is offered for an annual subscription. The darker side of capitalism. Lets see how it goes with Avenza... a similar app will emerge for sure and for better.

So my app gets updated and now I have to buy a subscription in order to use it. And now that I paid for the subscription I still cant use the app because it immediately Crashes when I try to open it. Seems to me someone got greedy then cheapened the product.

I always thought they deserved to make a little money, instead of being free, but $130 per year for what used to be general functionality is just ridiculous, especially when you still have to buy maps in their store on top of that, unless you want to upload your own. Also, in spite of working for about a day after updating, now whenever I open the app it immediately closes. Ive tried restarting my phone several times and also updated to the latest iOS and nothing seems to fix it. Very disappointed, really didnt want to lose my favorite map app.

This update is crap! How can you charge $130/year to grant access to a coordinate system you didnt create and do not own? You have just lost all of your active military and veteran users. Happy Veterans Day!

I used to love this app and used it all the time for flying. Since the update you can only have 3 maps and you have to pay for more. Also you can no longer use MGRS unless you pay. I would have given zero stars if I could have.

Used to use this product all the time. Now with their new overpriced subscription model. I will no longer recommend this product to anyone. Id pay maybe $30 one time for this app but not $130 every year. Greed at its finest. Maybe you should have done some testing on your market before you screwed everyone out of an decent mapping app. Hopefully all the negative ratings you are receiving are making you rethink your strategy.

GeoPDF is a standard extension to PDF. That this app still does not support. As its just a thin wrapper around Apples PDFkit, I guess it should be no surprise. But I brought this to their attention several YEARS ago.

I am very disappointed with this update. The developer took away MGRS which I paid for with the original app and now expects me to pay $129.99 annually to get this feature back and other features I already payed for. I used to recommend this app and no longer will give my recommendation and urge people to steer clear of anything from this developer, learn some ethics!

Got all my maps.

Ive used PDFmaps on my farm for over 3 years, and last year I rolled it out to all of my employees. It WAS a fantastic and simple way for us to locate, communicate, pin and measure. I dont use the store, so Avenza never made any money off of us. In its fully functional state, its probably worth a 1-time $30-40 fee, but definitely not worth a subscription (subscribing to what?...). Based on the other reviews, we wont be updating. Ive also used Garafas GIS Kit for many years, and Ill probably transition my team to that even though it has a habit of crashing. FYI, I have the $300 GIS Pro version, but the $100 Kit version is just fine for most folks.

This use to be a great app, but now they want you to subscribe to a $129 yearly subscription to use more than 4 maps. That ruins it for me. Im off to find another similar app.

GARBAGE! I would give it zero stars now if I could. It was much better before the update, I used it all the time, now you have to pay for MGRS which is what we use to get grids! FIND A DIFFERENT APP!

Worst Update Ever! Way to get rid of MGRS and try to charge a small fortune for a mapping product. The app was once one of my favorite apps to use for military aviation and now I wouldnt recommend it to anyone.

Im glad read through the whole app description and reviews before considering installing the update. I hope they allow uploading more than 3 of your own maps in the next update. Why pay to use free map PDFs? Avenza should stick to taking a cut of map sales instead of implementing this absurdly expensive subscription model. Paying for a feature-rich pro version is fine. Paying to keep your free version is not!

Although long a fan and proponent of PDF Maps, thats changed. Can no longer add new maps unless I remove many from my existing archive. How many?--dont know. Already stripped 30, and that hasnt been enough.

This used to be a great app that I used many many times a day now it is junk and will not work at all for me or hundreds of people that I know in my business!! Definitely not worth paying for!! many other free apps do the same thing!!! See ya

Do not update. You used to be able to use unlimited custom maps from other sources. Now they make you pay a high priced subscription to unlock having more than 3 maps. Use another app such as GaiaGPS or dont update to 3.0 or beyond!!!!!

This app was amazing when you could upload your own maps. I used it on a day to day basis with MGRS grids. But with the latest update I lost the option to use MGRS and now I have to pay to upload my own maps? I will no longer be recommending this app to anyone and letting my friends know.
