Avenza Maps: Offline Mapping App Reviews

This is perfect for custom PDF maps. I love being able to see my location on my own custom maps. I can create waypoints with attributes too.

PDF maps with embedded GPS data are rare, but if one exists that suits your needs, this is a huge advancement over the paper print-out. On my iPhone, Ive used it for cycling and transit and while it takes a long time to do the initial rasterization, once the bitmaps are in there, the interface is very fast and smartly designed. At first I thought it was lame that it could not keep the file vector, but even on my MacBook Pro, some PDF maps can take 10 seconds to render so I can understand why the maps need to be bitmaps. I cant wait for more maps and I hope I can use this the next time Im a tourist somewhere new.

Doing oil exploration, I have access to custom PDF maps created with Arcview and the program works flawlessly, allowing easy loading and selection of maps and waypoint creation. Im still new with the program, but so far Im impressed.

This is a good option to fall back on while traveling if you need off line maps. Ive tried Many others bit this is one of the better free ones.

I guess the best part of this app is that the maps are on the iPhone and you do not need to be using your data plan. The strength here is the developers of the app. They go out of their way to make sure that things work. For example they contacted a map provider and had them tweak their map to work better. Both email and phone support are great. The weakness here is most likely the map providers. So contact the developer if you have problems with a map I think they will help ensure that it works. This is a very solid, well written application. The support for geoPDF maps is incredibly useful for our GIS users within our aviation company Caveat: This app would be rated 5 stars if you could record and view your track, then email it as a gpx or kml. I have another app that does this is and allows for the use of custom maps but is badly written and a pain to use. I would pay for GPS track viewing and export capability in this app. Hint Hint.

Couldnt get any maps for my area. So whats the point?

Wanted to buy the maps...but for Central America & Caribbean theres just 1 choice- El Salvadore.

Just paid 6 bux for a map that only shows a topo that u can barely zoom? And no streets avail in the map!? Junk

I used this app on a recent snowshoeing trip in Algonquin park. Worked great! The gps positioning on the map was excellent and made it really easy to use. Request: more maps for Ontario parks!

Very limited at the moment for Canadian PDF maps, but will be great as more maps become available. The quality of the new Canadian digital PDF maps are outstanding. The advantage is that data can be easily added or changed for an up-to-date map. The app has a nice UI and set of features, even a track log, somewhat hidden, but can email the log which is useful. Highly recommend it!

My first thought was "yes! Finally!" until I tried to download the map of Algonquin park which I wanted to try on my upcoming camping trip and it kept freezing/crashing my phone during the extraction process!?? Very disappointed I am indeed.

An app and system like this is a longtime overdue. Finally I can buy and use maps on my iPhone like I do music and videos. I just used in in Germany and in Algonquin Park Ontario. The park map is awesome and worked amazing where there was no 3G. I have no idea what that last guy is talking about. The Algonguin Park map that I got was free and very detailed and never failed me.

This app is a great tool for those who want an alternative to traditional gps nav units or paper maps. It allows you to essentially carry all your maps in one place and view your position on those maps in real time (so long as they are georeferenced). No more guess work! Thanks!!

Great app. Supports georeferenced maps from ArcMap. Could do with improvements to GPS tracking and recording. Great application for forestry.

To have to pay for a single map!!!

Really handy tool to manage maps and put pins on those certain locations, although they should really invest in giving us the option to highlight those certain roads, places or just plain sentences!

Just downloaded the latest update and now the app crashes when I open it. I cant seem to fix it or find any help. Great program, but this is serious problem.

I recently went hunting in Northern Ontario. I purchased the Backroad Digital Maps and installed them on my 3G Ipad. I installed the IPAD in my Yamaha Rhino using a RAM mount. I did not loose coverage at all when on the trails, the APP worked great and could see all the small trails I wanted to explore. Thanks

Works great when its actually working. Crashes the app every second time you open it. Crashes the entire iPad about every 5th time. Fix the crashing issues and Ill change my rating to 5 stars.
